UAW 2322 Statement on Roe V Wade Overturning

Fellow workers,

The US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade is an earth-shattering—and horrifying—assault on human rights and bodily autonomy. As a result of this ruling, millions of people across the US will no longer have access to safe abortions. It represents a direct attack on women and trans people, especially those who are marginalized in multiple ways, effectively eliminating their federally guaranteed rights to privacy and reproductive healthcare.

UAW 2322 stands in full solidarity with everyone affected by this ruling. An injury to one is an injury to all. We believe the struggle for reproductive justice is central to the mission of organized labor. Reproductive justice, being “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities,” is directly aligned with the values of the labor movement. Unions can, and must, lead the way in these dark times. We need a vision for a humane, livable, and just future for all.

In order to support each other, share information and collectively plan the Local’s next steps we will be holding an open meeting on Thursday, July 7 at 5pm. It will run for approximately an hour and a half, but will extend as needed. This meeting is open to all members of the Local; we encourage all to attend to help us respond productively to this massive crisis.

In the meantime, we urge anyone who has been impacted by this to reach out to us at reproductivejustice@uaw2322.org. We will do everything we can to answer your questions and get you the support and resources you need.

Additionally, at the bottom of this email is a non-exhaustive list of resources for our members in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont as well as more broadly.

Solidarity always,
