Nonotuck Community School

The Nonotuck Community School, Inc. opened in 1977 and is a non-profit childcare center and preschool run with the cooperative effort of its member families. In January 2005, the School moved to its current location on Riverside Drive in Northampton.

The Nonotuck childcare staff have been unionized since 1988; there are currently 12 union members at Nonotuck. While the shop may be small, the workers have one of the strongest childcare contracts in the Local, including smaller child to teacher ratios than OCCS guidelines, a voting staff member on the Board of Directors, a dental plan with employer contributions, paid time for progress report writing, and severance pay if layoffs occur. Teachers and parents are actively involved in advocacy efforts for early childhood education.
