In passing the House budget late last night, the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted to strip municipal teachers, police officers and other workers of their rights to bargain over healthcare costs. AFSCME local 1776, the union who represents many of our workers in the dining commons, Physical Plant, housing, etc. is fighting to represent non-unionized workers on campus. A category of employee, 03, is considered to be temporary, and so those hired as ’03’s’ work for much lower wages and few benefits.
