On Monday, May 8th, early education teachers and childcare workers with UAW Local 2322 at Springfield Partners for Community Action’s Early Learning Center went on strike. These 16 union members held a three day strike in response to unfair labor practices by management during negotiations. On Thursday, May 11th union members returned to work after a successful bargaining session that puts us on a path towards a full agreement. Highlights include the implementation of an immediate wage increase that averages 5.7%, agreements on a ratification bonus, significant movement on wardrobe policy, and a commitment from management to continue negotiating over compensation and personal time when the Massachusetts state budget is finalized early this summer.
While we do not yet have a full tentative agreement, we are confident that going back to work these next months, preserving our rights to take collective action, and having won material wins in the meantime, will enable us to negotiate a fair contract that meets the demands and needs of the teachers and childcare workers. Members collectively made this decision with parents and children in mind, and they are excited to get back to work to continue supporting their community.
