GEO Members,
While Wisconsin may seem far away geographically, the outcome of this current conflict has serious consequences for GEO, particularly in upcoming negotiations and legislative battles. TA’s are in danger of losing their union as Governor Walker wants to strip public sector unions of basic protections and functions that unions have had since the 1930’s.
“Unions today are strongest in the public sector; a new round of Republican governors are out to completely eliminate public sector unions. The Wisconsin battle may be decisive, but similar bills are under consideration in other states. More than 30,000 people turned out to demonstrate in Madison; Democratic legislators are in hiding (literally), boycotting the legislature to prevent a quorum.”
The bill in Wisconsin wants to force unions to hold a certification elections yearly or lose representation, make contracts yearly, end dues payroll deduction, and institute rules that weaken union structures.
