Job Posting for Servicing Representative

Position: UAW Local 2322 Servicing Representative/Organizer to be assigned to the Graduate Employee Organization Unit [assignment may change based on organizational need in the future]. UAW Local 2322 is based out of Holyoke, Massachusetts, however this position will service and primarily work from the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. This position is a Bargaining Unit position.

Hours of work:  Normally 40 hours/week salaried position with a June 1 start date.

 Duties include but are not limited to:

Representational

  • Coordinating member-driven contract negotiations
  • Working with members/stewards to administer & enforce contract, resolve disputes, process grievances, arbitrations & Unfair Labor Practices
  • Participate in new shop organizing
  • Conduct new member orientations & engage in internal member mobilization activities
  • Organize workers to address worksite & economic justice issues through collective action
  • Maintain regular & effective communication with workers and UAW staff
  • Facilitate labor-management meetings in worksites
  • Organize & participate in rallies, demonstrations, meetings (including but not limited to: joint council meetings, stewards’ meetings, committee meetings, coalition meetings, etc)
  • Participate in & recruit members to participate in political, labor & union campaign activities
  • Develop fliers, posters, buttons, slogans & other campaign related materials & items
  • Help develop the Union’s message by talking to members, stewards & union leaders, & articulate this message among the membership at large

Office related

  • Checking phone/email messages & responding in a timely manner
  • Work with office staff to maintain accurate membership & mailing lists
  • Draft memos & documents
  • Keep e-board & joint council advised of any developments regarding potential problems, hot issues, & activities union needs to be involved in
  • Fax, photocopying, & filing
  • Run errands pertaining to union activities
  • Other duties as assigned/necessary

 Skills & qualities preferred:

  • Prior organizing experience and/or union involvement
  • Excellent interpersonal & group communication skills both oral & written
  • Detail oriented
  • Adaptable to environments (formality of dress, appearance, accessibility to buildings, etc. varies)
  • Ability to work with & take direction from the Local President, Executive Board & Joint Council
  • Self-motivated & able to work independently while also being part of team
  • Patience, persistence, enthusiasm, tact & flexibility
  • Computer literate: email, internet & MicroSoft Office skills needed
  • Familiarity with the field of higher education (health/human services & early childhood education a plus)
  • Fine tuned & attentive listening skills
  • A properly insured, registered vehicle & a valid Drivers License is required.
  • Multi-language skills useful
  • Applicant must show a demonstrated commitment to Social Justice
  • Applicant must be a member in good standing of the UAW for at least one year prior to hire
