The MHC housekeepers organized their unit in 2000. Over half of the workers in the housekeeping unit have over thirteen years service and loyalty to the college. Nine workers have twenty or more years service and employment with the college. This group has a long term relationship with the college and turn over is extremely low.
The housekeepers reached an agreement and settled their first contract with the college in June 2001. The bargaining unit is active and meets as a large group regularly for membership meetings and as a smaller elected group with management for labor/management meetings.
The unit recently settled their second contract with renewed pride and saw the power of organized labor in action with lively negotiations. The bargaining committee was able to win new benefits, hold on to past benefits, and improve overall language throughout the contract.
The number one issue was that the workers want to be treated with respect and dignity and have an article in the contract specific to that goal. The housekeepers continue to show management that the unionized worker can not be ignored and has a place at the table.
