July 2,
“Tough Guise”: Director Jackson Katz argues
that violence, including school shootings and
bullying, is part of a crisis in masculinity. Katz applies feminist insights
about gender and power to the experiences of
boys and men.
July 9, “Burma VJ”: Documentary about
collective of underground video journalists who recorded the 2007 protests by
students, Buddhist monks and activists against
Burma’s repressive dictatorship and smuggled the footage out of the country,
risking torture and imprisonment. 84 min.
July 16, “Dirt! The Movie” takes a
humorous and substantial look at the history and current state of the living
organic matter we come from and will later
return to. 90 min.
July 23, “Plunder: The Crime Of Our Time”
looks at the criminal activities that brought
about the credit crisis by speaking with investigative journalists,
whistleblowers, and the white-collar thieves responsible for tanking the U.S.
economy. From the outrageous hedge funds to the
bailout, veteran filmmaker Danny Schechter works
his way to the source of our current economic problems.
July 30, “Seeing Red” is a portrait of
members of the U.S. Communist Party who are
still passionate about their involvement and why they left the party, or chose
to stay in it, after disclosures about Stalin’s reign. Includes appearances by
everyone from Pete Seeger to Ronald Reagan. 100 min.
