June 2010

Wednesday 6/30 - Union Busting Is Disgusting

Join the “Hour of Power” Picket Lines against Union Busting

8:30-9:30am at the Delaney House, 1 Country Club Rd, Holyoke

A statement from Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice, Weymouth, Mass., released May 1, 2010 (the feast of St. Joseph the Worker), offers a detailed argument that actions to thwart union organizing campaigns, stifle contract talks, unilaterally roll back wages and benefits, and break existing labor agreements are a “grave violation of Catholic social doctrine on labor unions” and a mortal sin.

·    They also violate the social doctrine of other American faiths.

·    They also violate Articles 23 and 24 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work. Everyone who works has the right to just and favorable remuneration ensuring for themselves and their family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection. Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of their interests. Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

·    They also attack our democratic rights to freedom of association and justice.

·    They also wreck the economy by trying to destroy middle class wages, hours, and working conditions.

So, what is being taught on June 30?

On Wednesday June 30, our area’s preeminent anti-union law firm, “S.A.P.” will be teaching “Employment Law 101” to Human Service Forum members, non-profit organizations that benefit from government subsidies and contracts. “S.A.P.” say they represent “only the interests of management and employers.”  More information about law firms like “S.A.P.” visit http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/the-anti-union-network/for-profit-union-busters/for-profit-unionbusters.html
